Student Member

This level is for part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate students. It includes full membership benefits, except for the freelance directory listing, voting, and holding office in BELS. Student membership is renewable once for a total of two years of membership at this level.

  • For individuals who:
    • are working and taking related supplementary courses for professional development,
    • or working in a related field, and
    • are not yet eligible or ready to take the ELS exam.

Pathway to the Pin Member

This level includes full membership benefits, except for the freelance directory listing, voting, and holding office in BELS. Pathway to the Pin membership is renewable once for a total of two years of membership at this level at which time 1) an individual sits for the BELS exam; or 2) the person’s Pathway to the Pin membership ends.

  • For individuals who:
    • are working and taking related supplementary courses for professional development,
    • or working in a related field, and
    • are not yet eligible or ready to take the ELS exam.

Emeritus Category

This level includes full membership benefits, except for the freelance directory listing. Certificants who retire (and therefore are no longer working as editors in the life sciences) are not expected to renew their ELS/ELS(D) credential every 5 years. Instead, they may complete a form to notify BELS of their change in employment status, and their names will be moved to a “Retired” category of the ELS/ELS(D) roster, whereupon the credential should no longer be used professionally. Converting ELS status to “Retired” does not affect membership in BELS, and membership may continue upon payment of annual dues (including Emeritus membership for those who meet the criteria).

  • For BELS-certified editors who:
    • are age 60 or older,
    • are retired from editing, and
    • have paid full membership dues for the last 5 years (or for 25 years in total).
